How to Clean Awning Windows from Inside
No ladder. No fuss. Here’s how to do it properly.
Awning windows open from the bottom and push outward. This makes cleaning the outside glass a bit tricky. But don’t worry — you can do it all from inside your home.
Here’s a simple, step-by-step guide.
Step 1 — Remove the Fly Screen
Start here. It makes everything easier.
Jolong awning windows have a magnetic fly screen. It snaps off from the inside. No tools needed.
Wash the screen in warm soapy water. Give it a gentle scrub. Leave it flat to dry.
Step 2 — Open the Window Fully
Use your chain winder to push the window open as far as it goes. A fully open window gives you much more room to work and reach the glass.
Step 3 — Clean the Inside Glass
Mix a small amount of dish soap into your warm water. Dip your microfiber cloth in and wring it out.
Wipe the inside glass from top to bottom. Go in straight lines. This stops streaks from forming.
Finish with a dry towel. Make sure no moisture is left behind.
Step 4 — Clean the Outside Glass from Inside
This is the clever part.
Use a magnetic window cleaner. It has two sides — one goes on the inside, one sits on the outside. Move the inside piece and the outside piece follows. Clean glass without stepping outside.
No magnetic cleaner? A long-handled squeegee works well too. Extend it through the open window and wipe the outside glass from top to bottom.
Step 5 — Wipe Down the Frames
Don’t forget the aluminium frames. Use a damp cloth to wipe away dust and grime. Pay extra attention to the corners — dirt loves to hide there.
Avoid bleach and chemical sprays. They can fade the powder-coated finish over time.
Step 6 — Check the Drain Holes
Jolong awning windows have built-in drainage holes at the bottom of the frame. These small holes let water escape. If they get blocked, water can build up inside the frame.
Use a cotton bud or a toothpick to gently clear any blockages.
Step 7 — Lubricate the Chain Winder
Once everything is clean, give your chain winder a little care. Apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant. It keeps the mechanism smooth and quiet. Do not use WD-40 — it attracts dust and gums up the mechanism over time.
Step 8 — Put the Fly Screen Back
Once the glass and frames are completely dry, snap the magnetic fly screen back into position. It clicks right back into place.
How Often Should You Clean?
Clean your Jolong awning windows at least twice a year. We recommend once in spring and once in autumn. This removes pollen, dust, and salt buildup — especially important for homes near the coast.
Regular cleaning keeps your windows looking brand new and working perfectly for years.
